Waste, its management, collection and destination, represent one of the highest environmental priorities worldwide. More than 36% of the waste sent to landfills is organic waste *. Unfortunately, it has been registered since 2013 that the majority of waste went directly to landfill *.

Thanks to proactive individuals, sensitive to this problem, composting organic waste has been a growing initiative worldwide and this type of bags optimizes waste management costs.

Because the bags are fragile and easily compostable, it is recommended to use breathable containers, with a ventilated lid and sides, which allow the moisture to evaporate. This way, waste will not rot and unpleasant odors are minimized.

In Europe, only 25% of the organic waste produced is composted, with a long way to go.

Are the bags suitable for domestic composting? What is the difference between domestic and industrial composting?

Domestic composting is different from industrial composting for two main reasons:

1 – The temperatures reached by domestic composting are normally only a few degrees above the outside temperature and only for a few periods of time. In industrial composting, the temperatures reached can reach 70ÂșC for several months in a row.

2 – Domestic composting is often carried out by inexperienced people and composting conditions may often not be ideal. On the other hand, in industrial composting, there are qualified and trained personnel to maintain the ideal conditions for composting.

These bags are certified for domestic compost because they are biodegraded at room temperature and in a homemade composter.

How long does the compostable bag take to disintegrate if it is discarded in the environment?

Disposal in the environment should never be done, under any circumstances. The biodegradation process depends on climatic conditions and how active and biological the environment is where it is discarded.

Are the bags biodegradable at sea?

The biodegradability of the bags has been demonstrated in liquid conditions and at room temperature, which is important evidence that it is biodegradable in aquatic environments. Further laboratory studies are being carried out to complement the results.

What is the proportion of land used to produce the corn starch used to make the bags?

Corn starch comes from Italy. The proportion is 0.05% of the whole area that already produces maize in Italy.

What is the great advantage of using a compostable bag, when compared to a polyethylene bag?

By using compostable bags, we are giving the possibility to have and increase the options for organic recovery. The use of raw materials based on renewable resources is increasingly strategic as we try to move away from non-renewable resources, such as oil.
